“In the government of New Democracy, they are devotees of the theory that the market is self-regulating”, stressed the press representative of PaSoK, Thanasis Glavinas, on the occasion of the high prices of the coastal ferries.
He explained that “as in other matters, e.g. in the food trade, as well as in ferry tickets, they expect that some invisible hand will be able to create the right conditions in the market. However, this is not the case. The market needs strong state interventions, which the government consciously avoids and unfortunately offers super profits in markets that have an oligopolistic structure.”
Thanasis Glavinas noted that “the high prices of ferry tickets concern our islands, in which the ferry connections function as a ‘national road’ for their permanent residents. It is not, as falsely or deliberately reported by government officials, a means to move only tourists”.
“The government, instead of providing solutions to problems, offers arrogance”
Thus, he underlined, “to a series of failures of the government to regulate the cartels in health, fuel, transport and food is added that of the prices of ferry tickets. In all these cases, which burden the citizens every day, the government of the New Democracy comes with a long delay and under the pressure of the facts to take some inadequate measures”.
Regarding the position and proposals of the PASOK regarding the major issue of accuracy, the party’s press representative pointed out that “there is a very powerful tool at our disposal and that is the Competition Commission, which operates in all countries under the auspices of European Union. So when the aforementioned commission is strong and adequately staffed – which is not the case today – then it can impose fines and regulate competition in the market so that there is no profiteering. Therefore there are proposals. Does the government of Mr. Mitsotakis have the political will to oppose specific oligopolistic interests?” asked Mr. Glavinas.
“The government, instead of providing solutions to the problems, offers arrogance”, also stated the press representative of the PASOK, speaking to Open, regarding yesterday’s statements of the Deputy Minister of Migration and Asylum, Sofia Vultepsi, who proposed as a solution the accuracy of coastal shipping, instead of the Greek islands, let’s prefer the… inland.
“At PASOK, we have the experience to conduct flawless elections”
Finally, when asked about the process of the October 6th internal party elections and the suspicion that hangs in the air – mainly on behalf of the candidate for the leadership of PaSoK, Haris Doukas – Thanasis Glavinas was clear, noting that “at PaSoK we have the experience and the know-how, after all, we were the first to bring the election process from the grassroots, to conduct the intra-party election process without flaws”.
He recalled, in fact, that in the last process of 2021, 270,000 citizens had voted, “a number we did not expect”, but the system and the executives “responded perfectly. Even now, the responsible committee, the executives, the representatives of the candidates and the entire party will work so that there will be no problem. Dwelling on procedural details and matters that have no particular basis is of no use. Everything will be done with absolute integrity and transparency,” he concluded.
