2023 is the year of profitability. For the third Christmas in a row, the City of Bordeaux installed the now well-known glass tree on Place Pey-Berland rather than a real conifer, as the town hall used to do. before the election of Pierre Hurmic.
Purchased for 136,000 euros to the artist Arnaud Lapierre, the work was debated at length. Or more precisely, it was the choice of mayor EELV which caused controversy. Accused of turning his back on tradition, the councilor was mocked and even threatened by mail.
In short, we are not going to return to this story already told by thousands and which Pierre Hurmic would prefer to bury. Besides, the subject remains sensitive – oh so hot from a political point of view – and the town hall always proves reluctant to communicate on this subject to avoid any backlash. The proof: we no longer hear about “dead trees”.
A five-year term for the glass tree
The municipality has decided to abandon the ideological ground on the Christmas tree, it is now pragmatic. Beyond environmentalist argumentsthe glass sculpture is a good financial transaction for the accounts of the EELV town hall, as written Bordeaux news from December 2021.
While the traditional conifer cost a minima 60,000 euros per year to the community, the glass tree was purchased for 136,000 euros, to which must be added a few thousand euros each year in logistics and security. The calculation is therefore simple: after three years, the municipality saves money.
“It is not an ephemeral work. It is reusable for at least five years and very easy to store,” Pierre Hurmic then confided to Bordeaux news, i.e. until the end of his minimum mandate. Then, the future of the glass tree, become a political totem despite himself, could be played out at the polls in 2026.
