Glass Bridge in China Shattered, Tourists Trapped in the Middle

Jakarta

Chinese officials have blamed strong winds after a 100-meter high glass bridge near the city of Longjing was destroyed and left a tourist stuck in the middle of it.

A statement posted to Longjing City’s official Weibo social media account said the tourist area of Mount Piyan, in the country’s northeast, had experienced extreme weather on Friday (07/05), and damaged several glass deck panels.

“Our staff rushed to the scene with emergency equipment and managed to move the trapped person to a safe place. The incident caused no casualties,” he said.

“The trapped person was taken to the hospital for observation. He was discharged because he was mentally and physically stable.”

The post also said that the Mount Piyan tourist area had been closed and that authorities were investigating whether other entertainment in the park posed a risk to visitors.

According to the Xinhua news agency, 60 glass deck bridges have been built in China since 2016.

“So many glass bridges have been built in recent years and are very popular with tourists. But how can we ensure their safety?” Xinhua quoted a social media user as saying.
