After some back and forth, Eintracht Frankfurt signed Oliver Glasner as the new head coach for the next three seasons last week. The Austrian comes from league rivals VfL Wolfsburg and will meet fellow countryman Martin Hinteregger on the Main. He’s already looking forward to seeing you again.
The head of defense got to know Glasner during his time at RB Salzburg. “He was the perfect assistant coach to Roger Schmidt. He was exceptionally good at that,” quoted the Frankfurter Rundschau the national player from a media round as part of the ÖFB’s EURO training camp. Hinteregger admits that the paths could have crossed again before the new season. “He wanted to bring me to Wolfsburg two years ago, but I’ve always said that Eintracht Frankfurt is my first point of contact.”
‘Kult-Kicker’ developed into the top of the Bundesliga
Instead of moving to Lower Saxony, Hinteregger stayed with Hessen after a loan and signed a contract that will run until 2024. The 28-year-old is considered one of the best central defenders in the Bundesliga and is known beyond the borders of Frankfurt as a kind of ‘cult kicker’ because of his open manner and relaxed sayings. For his sporting development, the left-footer sees the time under the outgoing Eintracht coach Adi Hütter as decisive.
Hütter “made me what I am”
“Two and a half years ago I was a completely different player. He made me who I am today,” explains Hinteregger. Accordingly, despite all the anticipation for the collaboration with Glasner, it is a shame that Hütter is moving to Borussia Mönchengladbach after three years with Hessen. However, Hinteregger also shows understanding. “I can understand that. When a Max Eberl calls, it’s hard to say no.” As is well known, the Carinthian himself had a six-month guest appearance in 2016 as a Salzburg loan to Gladbach.
