- During the climate summit in Glasgow, the youth organization Spire has a seconded, deputy leader Cari Anna Korshavn King. She blogs for Dagbladet.
The day starts at seven in Glasgow with corona self-test, something we have to do every day. We are five young people living in the same room from different youth organizations: Changemaker, YWCA-YMCA, Nature and Youth, and Spire, where I am deputy leader.
Runs up and down
Then we have to find our way to the Scottish Event Center (SEC), where the actual climate negotiations will take place. There has been a lot of confusion and confusion about who gets to participate where. I have run up and down the conference center at least five times to find out if I am allowed to attend different meetings.
Follows the recipe for breaking the Paris goals
Due to covid, there are very few places that go to civil society, and the UN’s own organizations are given priority, so the possibility of getting a place for the rest of us is very small. There is a lot of talk about how important it is to include young people, but now there is a queue of many young people outside important negotiations that are not included.
Last night, Ane Serreli, Norway’s Spire youth delegate, said that she could have a meeting with us young people and Jonas Gahr Støre. Of course, we said yes to this. The meeting was confirmed 40 minutes before it was to take place, and in a short time we had to coordinate and find out what we were going to say. We all work with different topics and wanted to highlight the important role Norway plays.
Ursula is a star
For me, it was important to bring out the topics Spire is working on, namely that we do not rely on an uncertain technology optimism as the only solution to the climate crisis. In addition, Norway, and the rest of the world, must contribute more climate financing, and this must not be at the expense of ordinary aid. We are also very concerned about food security and agriculture.
When we were on our way out of the meeting with Støre, Ursula von der Leyen came walking down the hall. For young people who are interested in politics, she is a star. Mobile phones are being pulled out to film her and her entourage passing by. We also meet someone who says that they have seen Justin Trudeau in line for the toilet.
