Jermaine Bucknor and Jonathan Dubas traveled to Jena with the RÖMERSTROM Gladiators team only in civilian clothes. Without the two power forwards, the next difficult league game started after the away defeat against Phoenix Hagen. But the Jena team also had to struggle with major personnel concerns, without the two Americans Zamal Nixon and Demarcus Holland, a lot of scoring and experience was missing in the small positions.

Chase Adams, Dan Monteroso, Thomas Grün, Jonas Grof and Robert Nortmann – Marco van den Berg sent these starting five into the away game at Science City Jena. Trier started the game much more aggressively compared to the last game against Phoenix Hagen, Thomas Grün got the first points with a cracking dunk. The gladiators convinced in the first minutes with a strong defense, good rebounding and quick deals. So it was possible to take the lead early with 2: 9. In the further course of the first quarter, Trier kept the intensity high and extended the lead to 10:18 after a wide three from Rupert Hennen. At the end of the first quarter, the hosts of Science City found their offensive rhythm and were able to steadily reduce the gladiators’ lead. Nevertheless, the first quarter ended at 18:20 for the guests from the Moselle, who showed a significant increase in performance compared to the game in Hagen.

Jena had problems against the Gladiators Defense

The gladiators also started the second quarter very focused and aggressive. The three-point fell largely on the Trier side and defensively they were always able to win the ball. After four minutes in the second quarter, they were already faced with four team fouls, but had extended the lead to 20:32. Science City lost touch with the game, the gladiators now had the game firmly under control. Three minutes before the end of the first half, the guests led by 22:42. The gladiators managed to set the pace defensively and to create good throws offensively. Despite a threesome with the half-time siren by Jenas Julius Wolf, the Moselaner led with a deserved 28:44 after twenty minutes.

Even after the break, the gladiators were wide awake. Defensive pressure continued to be exerted, the ball was rotated well offensive and free marks were found. Jena had big problems against the gladiators without successfully completing their injured guards systems. The aggressive defense of the Trier often forced the hosts to heavy throws. In the middle of the third quarter, the gladiators were leading 15 points (40:55, 25th minute). As in the first two quarters, Science City only got into its rhythm at the end of the quarter and was able to shorten it to 50:60 at the end of the third period.

Close exit for Trier

In the last quarter, Jena’s head coach Frank Menz reacted to the Trier personnel shortage in the major positions and brought four big men onto the floor. The Thuringian throwing rate has now also improved. The lead of the gladiators was only five points in the middle of the last quarter (61:66, 36th minute of play). At the end of the game, an open exchange of blows developed. Despite the strong defense of Trier, Jena continued to score much better from outside and was able to shorten it to 70:73 shortly before the end of the game. Chase Adams managed to win the game in favor of the RÖMERSTROM Gladiators with a heavy middle distance throw 20 seconds before the end. A strong team performance ensured the ultimately deserved 70:75 victory in Jena.

Marco van den Berg, Head Coach RÖMERSTROM Gladiators Trier: “A very important victory. We need success to get validation for what we train. Especially without Jermaine and without Jonathan this win was extremely important ”.
