It won’t be long, more precisely until Thursday next week. Then start with Gladiator 2 a sequel in cinemas that hardly anyone would have expected until a while ago. It is the next film of the tireless Ridley Scottwho even at the age of 86 still doesn’t think about quitting and his masterpiece from the year 2000, Gladiatorwould like to continue.
In addition to many high-class films, Ridley Scott is also known for subsequently creating so-called director’s cuts or extended cuts of his works. The most recent example is Napoleonwhich had a running time of 159 minutes in the theatrical version and requires a full 204 minutes of sitting time in the director’s cut.
Napoleon is no exception: even films like Blade Runner, Kingdom of Heaven or Robin Hood have received additional edits. As well Alien – The scary creature from a strange world and Gladiatoralthough Scott noted for both films that the theatrical version already corresponded to his original vision.
That should also be on Gladiator 2 apply. As Ridley Scott recently announced, the 148-minute cut corresponds to his intention for the film. He has earned the right to decide the cut himself and we can see this version in the cinema next week.
A lesson from Napoleon? A day-dependent statement? We’ll see if Ridley Scott changes his mind about the home cinema release.
Gladiator 2 starts on 14. November in our cinemas.
