For the final weekend of play, Schmidt had almost the last available squad from his squad. Robin Haase, Lukas Rosol, Adrian Menendez and Aleksandr Nedovyesov are 10th, 11th, 12th and 14th in the GHTC rankings – and there are certainly sporting reasons why, with the exception of Haase, none of these players were used in the first games of season.
–
Schmidt still had the best players of his squad on the pitch. They are now injured or touring on hardcourt in the United States. So it’s time for the “veteran” players, as Schmidt called the team for the weekend. In other words, experienced players who have rarely been considered recently.

But first there was another problem on Friday against Bredeney. Due to the start of school in North Rhine-Westphalia, no children with the ball were ready at 1pm on match day. We discussed it with our opponents the night before, it wasn’t a problem. Even for the referee, “says Schmidt. Later, when temperatures were high, ball children were voluntarily omitted for doubles matches.

Until then, the afternoon has been unexpectedly good for Gladbach. Haase, Rosol and Menendez all won their single match, only Nedovyesov lost to Rudolf Molleker. “I hadn’t seen Haase so well at number one in a long time, every ball flew into Rosol and Menendez fought hard,” says Schmidt, adding: “Actually, we thought differently: the singular could be difficult, in the double But we we are the favorites. ”On this day, however, it went the other way: in the two doubles, otherwise one of the strengths of the squad, the GHTC lost the victory – both times in a tie break match.” We thought: we will win definitely a brace. In the run-up I would have immediately signed a result of 3: 3. So we were a little disappointed in the end, “says Schmidt.

The team leader made his team happy during the week with a bowling night and a meal together, thus keeping motivation high for the last weekend of play. And so on Sunday at the end of the season in Aachen there was another points victory that was not necessarily foreseeable in advance. “We weren’t favorites against Aachen,” says Schmidt. After the single matches it was 2: 2, Rosol and Nedovyesov had won their matches, Haase and Menendez lost. This was repeated in doubles games: the duo Haase and Menendez lost, Rosol and Nedovyesov won. In the end it was 3: 3 against Aisgrana.

Gladbach finished the season in seventh place with 9: 9 points, with plenty of room to move up and down. At the end of the season Rochusclub Düsseldorf, remained unbeaten with 16: 2 points and champion of Germany for the first time in the history of the club. “Nobody had foreseen it. Grosshesselohe was the big favorite. But Düsseldorf had a strong season and was in a similarly successful wave as our championship in 2016,” says Schmidt.

Instead, newly promoted teams such as TC Ludwigshafen and Blau-Weiß Krefeld, a traditional club, must leave the Bundesliga. “It is a pity that Krefeld is relegated”, says Schmidt, “a well-deserved club with a great deal of commitment in the Bundesliga and many spectators. I hope Krefeld will recover quickly.”
