Glaciers, pyramids and the Great Wall of China – remarkable objects that are in danger of disappearing

The rapid development of the modern industrial world raises concerns about the future fate of many natural objects, architectural monuments and even entire cities. It seems inconceivable that the art and cultural heritage of the Mayan civilization, the pyramids of Ancient Egypt, the Great Wall of China and many other admirable places can simply disappear in the near future and continue their existence only in photographs and textbooks. Of course, also on the World Wide Web.

We offer to get acquainted with six noteworthy objects that are in danger of disappearing.

Tikal National Park in Guatemala

Tikal National Park is home to the ruins of the ancient and mysterious Mayan civilization, threatened with total or partial destruction due to regular looting and forest fires.

In the north of Guatemala, in the province of Petanta, there is the Tikal National Park, where the so-called Mayan forests spread. It is a huge area – about 57,600 hectares of wetlands, savannas, tropical broadleaf and palm forests, where the long-vanished Mayan civilization has left its architectural and artistic heritage. It was an important Mayan political, economic and military center. The area of about 400 hectares is home to palaces, temples, small and medium-sized villas, terraces and squares. Even surface decorations have been preserved, including stone carvings and hieroglyphic inscriptions on the walls. Nature is also amazing – the variety of flora and fauna is indescribable. There are more than 200 species of trees in the forests, but among them live pumas, jaguars, monkeys and more than 300 species of birds.
