Glacier equivalent in size to London apart from Antarctica. It is located close to the British Halley research station.
Launch BBC, Thursday (26/1/2023), the process did not surprise scientists. This is because the growth of large, unnamed new iceberg cracks on the Brunt Ice Shelf over the past decade has been closely monitored.
The Brunt Ice Shelf is the location of the British Antarctic Survey’s (BAS) Halley Research Station. The 21 scientists at the station also feel safe and will continue to work until they are picked up early next month. Halley Station is about 20 km from the line of the glacier’s break.
British Antarctic Survey (BAS) researchers monitored the glacier with a series of GPS devices in the area. It is this tool that relays information about ice movement that is channeled to the agency’s headquarters in Cambridge.
Officials will check satellite images as they become available. They wanted to see that no unexpected instability had appeared in the remaining ice sheet platforms holding Halley up.

Glacier mountain a similar size, known as the A74, broke in February 2021. At the time, it was thought that its release might kick off the latest breakup, but this event was anything but predictable.
The broken glacier the size of London is on the Brunt Ice Shelf. It is like a floating glacial peninsula that flows from the continent of Antarctica to the Weddell Sea.
On a map, the Weddell Sea is the sector of Antarctica directly facing south of the Atlantic Ocean. While Brunt is on the northeast side.
Like all ice shelves, it periodically gives birth to icebergs. Prior to the glacier and this newest A74, the last major chunk to break off Brunt occurred in 1971.
