Giuseppe Di Vittorio’s photo

On the day the First of May more anomalous and in some ways surreal for many years now, it was inevitable that between concertoni streaming and direct social it was precisely the latter that became the new squares where to remember the importance of Workers Day and the collective imagination dedicated to it. And among those who dusted off, updating it with masks, the “Fourth State” of Pellizza da Volpedo and those who reproduce the famous photo of 1932 with the workers taking a ‘panoramic’ break on the scaffolding of Rockefeller Center in New York, one of the hottest photos is that of Giuseppe Di Vittorio. In fact, the Apulian trade union historian, a figure still remembered by many as a forerunner of a certain way of leading the union, was cited by Enzo Amendola, Minister for European Affairs. “The worker is not just any tool, you can’t rent it, you don’t sell it” wrote Amendola quoting Di Vittorio and attaching one of his most iconic photos, in black and white, during a rally and in front of a flood of people, a context in some ways today unrepeatable and that not only that black and white reminds us how it is far in time. THE NEW “FOURTH STATE” ACCORDING TO MAURO BIANI

The famous painting created by Giuseppe Pellizza from Volpedo, which somehow inaugurated the twentieth century, readapted today for one Workers Day very particular and that sees millions of Italians celebrating May 1st closed at home or in any case for various reasons unable to resume their occupation. It is also for this reason that among the most iconic images of this Labor Day 2020 there is the so-called “Fourth State” of the Piedmontese painter where, however, this time to guide the mass of workers towards a hopefully brighter future are three categories that for a long time have been forgotten or in any case left on the margins of the public debate, or those who make home deliveries, medical personnel and nursing and workers in the fruit and vegetable sector (often migrants but also Italians: all this is also well represented by today’s cartoon of the designer Mauro Biani who put in the front row a nurse with lots of protective equipment and a mask, a black worker carrying a box of oranges and a boy who delivers what appears to be grocery shopping. The “new” fourth statebut often unfortunately forgotten by the state itself … (adj. by R. G. Flore)

THE HEROES NURSES PARTY

On the day it is celebrated Workers’ Day, there are many images with which on social networks we remember an anniversary that on the way of the Coronavirus emergency it is only virtual or in any case unpublished in some ways in Italy and beyond. And after that for years their category has been forgotten or in any case not always considered indispensable, doctors and nurses today celebrate 1st May immortalizing in the lane or in any case on the front line, where I have been tirelessly for two months. And also for this reason there are many who post pictures of to remember their efforts and their sacrifice nurses and healthcare professionals, rigorously with all the protections and masks, as if to remember that it is not important who those eyes are but that that anonymous collective effort has helped to avoid thousands more victims: and on the day of the Workers’ Day, while the most dramatic of the Covid-19 pandemic is not yet behind, there are those who celebrate as of weeks now, that is assisting the sick and leaving it to others (when they remember it …) the task of celebrating them. THAT FIRST MAY 1951 …

Happy May Day, this is the writing present in the images of this atypical Labor Day 2020 who have been going crazy on social media and in our chats on Whastapp since this morning but the only certainty is that today this day has a different flavor both for those who have lost their work and for those who have found the sacrifices of a fading life Street. Entrepreneurs and workers are on the same boat, that of uncertainty, but surely we look at today’s day with the hope that everything will change. To give us a different taste, however, is the Resto del Carlino which publishes a video that projects us back in 1951, rare color images of this day of many years ago, an unpublished movie that seems to be the first in color on the Labor Day in history Italian filmed by Bolognese Angelo Marzadori at Giardini Margherita. The video is present on the Home Movies Facebook page and can certainly give everyone the hope that today as then, something can change. (Hedda Hopper)

RINO GAETANO AMONG THE SYMBOLS OF THE WORKERS ‘DAY

There Labor Day 2020 will remain in the annals for the particularity of this day, characterized by a total absence of events in the square due to the Coronavirus pandemic that affects Italy and forced all of us to quarantine. For your greeting messages, however, the web is unleashing itself in the production of original images; in particular, on Twitter, there is one in which doctors and nurses are seen lined up in the foreground wearing the mask and the “hospital” H in the background. To accompany it, a quote from the piece “But the sky is always bluer”, by Rino Gaetano: “Who sweats, who struggles, who eats once. Who misses the house, who lives alone. Who takes very little, who plays with fire. Who lives in Calabria, who lives of love. Who made war … “. Enrico Letta, a well-known politician, publishes a vintage snapshot that reads “W on May 1st”, while there is no shortage of people who ironic with photomontages and insert a police officer intent on fining a crowd of people who left the house without a good reason. GREETINGS IMAGES LABOR DAY 2020: THE PHOTO SYMBOL

And the first of May, Party of Workers 2020, and never like this year will it be difficult to find a really good reason to celebrate. However, we will try to raise the mood of those who are stuck at home due to the lockdown as well as those who are still victims of the precarious, with a series of images to wish our personal “Happy May 1st”, perhaps to be attached to a sentence or a quote famous at work dictated by the many authors who over the centuries have commented, criticized or praised this important and inevitable parenthesis that characterizes the lives of each of us. Let’s leave immediately from the symbol image of the Labor Day, or that linked to work. This is the shot dating back to 1932, “Lunch atop a skyscraper (lunch on a skyscraper)”, published on the pages of the Sunday supplement of the New York Herald Tribune and become iconic of the Great Depression period. Taken on the scaffolding of the Rockefeller Center in New York, the author’s name is not known cult photo but we know for sure that this is a positive shot, just what Italy needs at the moment, as it represented the restart of the country even at the time. Here then that sending via Whatsapp or email, but also sharing via social the first image that we propose at the bottom of the page, could represent the best wish for all Italians.

GREETINGS IMAGES LABOR DAY 2020 TO BE SENT ON WHATSAPP

On the day of first of May, we continue with ours roundup of images to wish Good party of the Workers to relatives and friends. In this case we decide to do it with a smile and starring Winnie the Pooh while wishing not only a good May 1st but also a good start to the new month, which may be the right one for the restart of each of us. Then space to a bit of (bitter) irony, the one that could affect the many (unfortunately) precarious: for this purpose we propose a satirical cartoon that illustrates the imaginary (but realistic) dialogue between a father and son. You can also find the classic images of Happy May 1st with some phrases that will make us reflect, such as the one in which we read: “The best antidote to pain is work”.
