At 24, Roman Barbette, child of Saint-Selve (Gironde), finish his studies at Small. He took advantage of confinement to create a micro enterprise.
In a year, he will normally graduate and devote himself entirely to the company he has just set up. Its brand is « Moran 1996. » Meet.
Today, you have not finished your studies, but you are already the boss of a micro-enterprise?
Yes, last March during the first confinement, everything stopped. I am studying marketing in Lille, so I returned to Saint-Selve. In my family, I am in an artists’ cocoon. I really like photography, clothes, art. I said to myself “why not take advantage of this time to develop a professional project in order to better anticipate my professional integration.” “
“I want to make hand-embroidered clothes”
From there, I started. I started to embroider some t-shirts, I looked for my brand name by playing with my first name Roman which gave “Moran”. I published my creations on the networks and I had my first orders. I was told “you can put your logo on my t-shirt”. From there, I told myself that I had a card to play.
When the idea of a clothing brand emerges in your head, you have a very precise idea of the fabric used …
Yes, already I start from the principle that a garment is like a work of art. I don’t want to manufacture in large quantities, I want exclusive, unique, and responsible products. Although my supplier is Belgian, and it is not made in France, I admit, we still have a big ecological commitment. The line of conduct is clear: it is art and matter. If the pattern must be original, the fabric is not common either. We use organic cotton which saves 91% water compared to conventional cotton. It is not composed of any pesticides, GMOs or chemical fertilizers. We are certified on several criteria: “no animal testing”, “recyclability control”, “quality, absence of toxicity” and “working conditions. “
Thanks to a jackpot, you collected more than 3,500 euros to send your first orders. A huge success. How will you organize the end of your studies and the development of your business?
It’s a real challenge. I will have to surpass myself because my oral results are falling at the same time as the sending of my first orders. I am already planning on next year, the studies will be completed, and I will be back in Saint-Selve. It is here, at home, that I want to create my online store. I want to manage everything from A to Z. I know how to take my photos, my staging, and my creations. I trained in screen printing, and I plan to invest in an embroidery machine because I want to make hand-embroidered clothes.
There are thousands of clothes shops. How to make the difference ?
There are plenty of t-shirt vendors, it’s true. But, as a creator, you have to find your uniqueness. I want a creative look, keeping in mind that clothes will always be in small quantities. In art, we number the works, I intend to number my clothes to support this collection side. This project has a cost, I’m not hiding it, it’s a financial investment, and I’m starting from zero.
