The Metropolitan Museum of Art de New York (United States), the famous MET, hosts marquees old church Notre-Dame du Bourg from Langon (Gironde), allées Jean-Jaurès, dating from the 12the century. It’s in the department The Met Cloisters, located north of Manhattan, which can be admired in “the largest collection of medieval art in America. ”
“There is a bridge to be established with the Met”
Jérôme Guillem, mayor of Langon, contacted again by mail with Griffith Mann, the chief curator of the MET to evoke these vestiges “of the Langon Chapel”.
“More than 20 years ago, with Patrick Lavaud and the Nuits Atypiques festival, we had a twinning project with New York musicians. Then the Atypical Nights left Langon, the projects were put to sleep … We know the value of this heritage of Notre-Dame-du-Bourg. I decided to include the city in the process of Cities of Art and History; this unique history of marquees in New York is to be inscribed in our territory ”
Eight capitals and carved stones
The church has been remodeled many times and has undergone significant destruction before becoming national property during the Revolution and being transformed into a meeting place, shows and then a cinema (the Florida).

Eight marquees and carved stones – two archivolts and a transom (lintel) – were sold in 1926 to a wealthy American collector. They were acquired shortly after the end of World War II by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and are now on display at the Museum of Cloisters in New York.
One of them represents two heads crowned with a diadem. The head on the right could be a female face, some believe it would beEleanor of Aquitaine.
