Gironde: a new heat wave expected this week

Ca Monday, the Gironde was placed in yellow vigilance with 12 other departments. Temperatures could reach over 40 degrees in Bordeaux at the end of the week.

Morbihan, Loire-Atlantique, Vendée, Gard, Ardèche, Drôme, Vaucluse, Tarn, Haute-Garonne, Landes, Charente-Maritime and Charente are also on orange alert.

Rising temperatures

According to the report of Météo France, after a gradual rise in temperatures from the south this weekend, a heat wave will set in from tomorrow, Tuesday. The following days, temperatures will continue to rise throughout the territory, reaching or exceeding 38°C in places, with a rather expected peak around the next weekend.

A powerful axis of high pressure is currently being set up between Morocco, France and the British Isles. These high pressures will play a role at the beginning of the week in the gradual warming of the air mass, by compression effect. At the same time, an upper low currently located near the Azores could play a role in the probable intensification of the heat wave at the end of next week. In a rotational movement, it could favor the gradual rise over the country of very hot air from Morocco and Spain.

What to expect this week?

Tomorrow Tuesday, the rise in temperature will continue. Temperatures will reach 34 to 36°C over much of the west and south of the country, up to 36 to 38°C from the Charentes to the south-west and the Rhône valley.

Wednesdaythe strongest heat spreads towards the center of the country.

From Thursday to Sunday, temperatures remain at a very high level, but they mark a slight and temporary drop in the north of the country on Thursday and Friday. This episode of high heat should therefore evolve into a heat wave. The chronological, geographical evolution, intensity and duration of this episode will be refined in the coming days.

Historic heat waves in July

There have been 44 heat waves across France since 1947. The last officially recorded heat wave took place in June 2022. The heat waves recorded since 1947 on a national scale have been significantly more numerous during the last decades. Over the last 35 years, they have been 3 times more numerous than over the previous 35 years. The number of days of heat waves has been multiplied by 9.

Of the 44 heat waves recorded by Météo-France since 1947, 25 began in July. The heat wave of July 2019, exceptional in its intensity equivalent to the heat wave of August 2003, particularly affected the northern half of the country where absolute temperature records had been broken.

The mercury had often exceeded 40°C for the first time since the start of measurements, sometimes locally reaching 43°C on the 25th. The heat waves of July 1983, July 2016 or July 2018 had been remarkable for their duration (more 15 days, up to 23 days in 1983).
The heat wave of 1947 (July 23 – August 4) was the most intense of the 20the century and was marked by temperatures above 40°C over a large part of the country.
