The month of March 2022 has a special flavor in Saint-Macaire (Gironde) because, after two years of scarcity due to covid, the carnival is back. Didier Billion, the brand new president of the Tous au carnaval association, is very happy: “We have been chomping at the bit since the last edition held in March 2019. Also, we are very enthusiastic to be able to get back to business because the carnival, c ‘is life ! “.
This year, the 2022 edition will be held from Friday March 25 to Sunday March 27, 2022. So as not to change good habits, Friday evening will be the opportunity to see the famous Mémés Griottes who will walk the streets of the medieval city dragging their floats of fire in a din always surprising for the new inhabitants. They will knock on doors to collect the carnival tax (in the form of food). Beneath their somewhat disturbing masks hides a great generosity.
Shows and entertainment
Indeed, this food collection is the subject of a moment of sharing with all the inhabitants the next day at noon in the village hall. Didier Billion specifies: “they too are waiting to see the Macarian population again, after three years of hibernation in the caves of the city; we could also see their degree of excitement in a short video captured without their knowledge and which circulated on social networks.
Saturday March 26 will be the big day. After the village meal, the afternoon will take place around the retirement home. With at the beginning, a make-up workshop and a snack inside for the children, and lots of games in the park, on the chapel side. Shows and events will take place in front of the schools before the big gathering of neighborhood floats.
Time travel
The theme will be “time travel”. Thus, for several weeks, certain districts of the city have been mobilizing for the design of a float in the greatest secrecy, working on the theme with the people attached to each float disguised as coherent. Around 6 p.m., all these beautiful people will take a circuit through the city, each crew will animate in music and choreography so that in the end the public present votes for the most beautiful ensemble.
The procession will be accompanied by smoke bombs with pyrotechnic stops at nightfall, the public will be equipped with lanterns. Around 8 p.m., the cremation of an element of each tank will be carried out on the Place de l’Horloge, all punctuated by songs, dances, fifes, etc. It should be noted that these moments of sharing and conviviality are also possible thanks to the beautiful inter-associative synergy which completes the organization of this carnival.
After the raffle draw, the party will continue in the village hall to the sound of the DJ’s music until the end of the night and the spectacular release of confetti.
