After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, here is the return of Pheasant Day organized by the approved municipal hunting association, the ACCA of Blaignac (Gironde). The meeting is set for Sunday 15 January 2023. The President, Patrice Bigaud, provides the minute details of this special hunting day that wants to be convivial.
Act : What is this day about?
Patrice Bigaud: This is an animation I created in 2011; he is my baby. It is a hunting day for which hunters pay the right to come and shoot pheasants. I release 5 pheasants per registered rifle and therefore for about sixty participants, 350 pheasants are distributed over the 50-60 hectares of hunting areas of five communes including obviously Blaignac, Bassanne, Floudès, Loupiac-de-la-Réole and Puybarban.
When are pheasants released?
PS: With about fifteen hunters, we will leave on Sunday morning January 15th, at 4am, to release the game. But first, on Saturday afternoon 14 January, I invite the “leaders” of the group, because hunters very often come in groups, to identify the hunting areas which will be indicated with colored signs.
How’s your day going?
PS: The appointment is given to all at 7 in the morning in the town hall of Blaignac. There, each hunter receives a colored ribbon that corresponds to the hunting area to which he is assigned. Breakfast is served. Around 8 in the morning everyone leaves for an hour and a half of hunting in their own area. Beyond this time, he has the right to roam all areas, to continue hunting pheasant but also that of any game he encounters.
What’s the point of this day?
PS: It is a convivial day of hunting because from noon the hunters, their companions and all those who wish to meet at the table around a hearty meal, cooked by the hunters themselves. It is a family celebration that ends with games of belote or, for those who wish, a hunting trip. And in the evening at 18 I distribute the catch among all the hunters according to the number of animals brought back. In general, out of 350 releases, about 200 birds are killed. I would like to thank all those who participate in the organization of this day as well as the presidents of the hunting associations of the neighboring municipalities who make their spaces available to us.
