Girona, the surprise of the season, regained second place from its neighbor Barcelona, with a late victory over its guest, the “deficient” Rayo Vallecano, 3-0, at the end of the twenty-sixth stage of the Spanish Football League.
Girona’s goals were scored by Ukrainian Viktor Tsygankov (53), and Brazilian winger Savio (91 and 95), raising his tally to 7 goals this season.
The match witnessed the expulsion of Rayo Vallecano defender Pep Chavarria in the 76th minute, 12 minutes after he entered the field, after the referee showed his face two yellow cards within just 50 seconds.
Girona returned to winning ways, after three matches during which it did not taste victory, as it tied 0-0 with Real Sociedad, lost to Real Madrid by four, and to Athletic Bilbao 2-3, in the last three stages of “La Liga”.
Girona coach Mitchell said, “There is still a lot to do, but the team needed a victory, after three matches without a win, and the match was difficult. The score 3-0 is not what we saw on the field. Everything was different.”
Girona advanced to second place with 59 points, at the expense of Barcelona (57), which won second place by defeating Getafe 4-0, and trailed by 6 points from leaders Real Madrid, who narrowly won over Sevilla 1-0, 12 stages before the end.
Rayo Vallecano, which suffered its 11th loss this season, froze at 25 points in 14th place.
