Girona won comfortably this Sunday (0-2) at the Sánchez-Pizjuán in a match in which Sevilla suffered too much from the first goal of the match, scored by Iván Martín on the edge of half-time, and did not know how to react in a second half in which Abel Ruiz sealed the score from a penalty.
The Catalan team thus has its second consecutive victory in the League and is now close to the top of the table, just the opposite of the Sevilla team, which occupies a relegation spot with two points and goes into the first break of the season in the midst of a deep crisis.
Just like in the first three games, the Sevilla team showed themselves to be a striking team with an offensive vocation, in which the debutant Barco and Ejuke formed a partnership on the left wing that created several chances at the start, two of which were finished off by Isaac with two low shots that posed a lot of danger.
The Girona side, somewhat cold, did not get close to Nyland’s goal until the half-hour mark, with a long-range shot from Miguel that the Norwegian palmed out for a corner, although the home side’s dominance was clear thanks to the good work of Agoumé and Sambi in the double pivot.
However, the Andalusians’ defensive weakness in this initial stretch of the league made it easier for Girona to score the goal that opened the scoring, generated by a combination between Bryan Gil and Miguel on the left flank and a low pass from the full-back that Iván Martín finished into an empty goal after Barco’s defensive confusion.
The Argentine full-back, more in tune in attack than defence, quickly assisted Ejuke for the Nigerian’s equaliser, which was ruled out for a millimetre-wide offside, and the visitors’ lead at half-time persisted thanks to Gazzaniga, who made a superb save from a cross-shot by Lukebakio.
Michel wanted to rub salt into Sevilla’s wounds with some offensive changes despite being ahead on the scoreboard and he brought on Danjuma and Asprilla, although the first clear chance of the second half fell to Abel Ruiz, whose header from the penalty spot was saved with his fist by Nyland (min. 60).
A free kick headed in by David López heralded the visitors’ second goal, as the centre-back’s extension fell at the feet of Francés, whose shot was blocked by Isaac’s hand and the referee, after consulting the video, awarded the penalty with which Abel Ruiz closed the scoring.
Although there was still almost half an hour of play left, including extra time, Sevilla completely lacked the ability to react and the end of the match was placid for the visiting team, who solved Sevilla’s only chance with a good save from Gazzaniga, a shot from the edge of the area by Ejuke.
