The Eritrean Biniam Girmay suffered an eye injury when opening a Prosecco bottle on the podium on Tuesday, because of which the 22-year-old can no longer continue in the Giro d’Italia. “What happened is a bit sad. I have to keep my eyes peeled,” said the classic specialist from the Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert team in a video message. Nevertheless, he was proud: “It was unbelievable. I am very grateful to the team. This victory is also for my colleagues.”
The cork unfortunately hit the driver in the face and left eye. Girmay became the first black African to win a stage in one of the three major cycling events on Tuesday.
