Home team Giacomo Nizzolo (Qhubeka Assos) finished in second place and his compatriot Elia Viviani (Cofidis, Solutions Crédits) won third place. Another Italian Alessandro de Marchi from the Israel Start-Up Nation team retained the pink jersey for the overall standings.

For Twenty-six-year-old Ewan, it was the fourth victory on the Gire and the 48th overall in his career. “It’s a relief. This year my goal is to win all three Grand Tours, but the first sprint stage didn’t work out for us here, so I came under pressure. I think in the finale I showed that I had the best legs, “ stated.

Ewan also jumped to 4th place in the scoring competition (56 points) ahead of Sagan (50 points). Nizzolo is at the forefront, scoring 72 points. De Marchi is 42 seconds ahead of Belgian Louis Vervaek (Alpecin-Fenix) in the overall classification, Sagan is in 101st place.

Wednesday’s route was tailor-made for mass commuting, as there was no mountaineering bonus or other significant ascent. The highest point of the stage was 75 meters above sea level. Only the technical range could bring complications. Shortly after the start, Filippo Tagliani (Androni Giocattoli-Sidermec) and Umberto Marengo (Bardiani-CSF-Faizane) escaped, and since the peloton did not let anyone else leave, only two remained. The duo gained a lead of no more than five minutes, but the package started to pull it off after driving 50 km and lost only less than a minute before the first speed bonus. Tagliani was first at the bonus, Sagan scored three points in the peloton spurt when he was overtaken by three big favorites to win the stage Fernando Gaviria (UAE-Team Emirates), Viviani and Tim Merlier (Alpecin-Fenix).

Shortly afterwards, the escape of the pair on their foreheads ended and the peloton went together at a slow pace. Another attack came 68 km before the finish, but again there were only two competitors – Simon Pellaud (Androni Giocattoli-Sidermec) and Davide Gabburo (Bardiani-CSF-Faizane). However, their lead did not get over a minute, 24 km before the end they were joined by Alexis Gougeard (AG2R).

Another ten kilometers later, one of the Ineos leaders, Pavel Sivakov, had an unpleasant fall, who could not avoid a tree in a pressed peloton. He continued with a painful grimace, but lost contact with the peloton. The hard fall also affected Bahrain-Merida stable leader Mikel Land, who had to resign from the race. The winner of the 4th stage, Joe Dombrowski, also finished on the ground and lost the 2nd place in the overall standings.

At the head of the peloton, there was already a fight for a position before the finish. The trio led only a few seconds, and three kilometers before the finish, her attempt ended. Saganova Bora led the package. The peloton stretched properly and was brought to the last kilometer by Daniel Oss.

Sagan started the spurt from the third position, but a train of Cofidis also ran past him with Caleb Ewan, who had the highest speed and left behind both Italians and Slovaks. For Nizzola, it was already the eleventh 2nd place on the Gire, and he had never won.

In the end, Landa didn’t get on the bike anymore and resigned from the race. An ambulance took him from the track to the hospital. “He was in pain, we’re not sure if he broke his collarbone or his wrist. Mikel was the leader of our team and he was here to try to win the Giro. But we’ll move on, we still have Pell Bilbao and Damian Carus here.” quoted Bahrain’s sports director Franco Pellizotti as cyclingnews.com.

Dombrowski and Sivakov came to the finish line with a big loss, but it is not yet known whether they will continue the race. Ineos sports director Matteo Tosatto said Sivakov suspected a collarbone fracture.
