“Giro d’Italia 2023: Classification and Highlights from Stage 18 – Coi and Val di Zoldo climb”

The classification of the Giro d’Italia 2023 suffered major jolts at the end of the stage eighteenone of the toughest sections of the Corsa Rosa: the very tough climb of Coi and the high altitude arrival in Val di Zoldo have put the great pretenders to the conquest of the Trofeo Senza Fine to the test. Head to head between the big names who aspire to wear the pink jersey on the top step of the podium in Paris and the show has never been lacking in the shadow of the Dolomites.

Primoz Roglic raised the pace significantly with just under nine kilometers to go at the finish. The Slovenian reared his head after paying duty two days ago on Monte Bondone and has immediately sent Joao Almeida into crisis, who had triumphed the day before yesterday. The Portuguese failed to keep up with the Balkan and of Geraint Thomas, who appeared perky in the pink jersey. Roglic was able to exploit the work of Sepp Kuss and Eddie Dunbar was with them.

Giro d’Italia 2023, today’s report cards: Zana deserves a career as captain! Roglic scratches, Caruso trudges

Roglic attempted a further stretch with seven kilometers to go, but was immediately marked by Thomas. Kuss continued his work as a follower, behind them Almeida (ferried by a sumptuous Jay Vine) did not drift and remained about twenty seconds away. Roglic, Thomas and Kuss passed the GPM of Coi with about 12” of margin on Almeida, Vine and Dunbar. In the short downhill section Almeida, Vine and Dunbar managed to rejoin at the start of the final climb of Val di Zoldo.

As soon as the road went up again, when there were a couple of kilometers to go to the finish line, Almeida paid the dues again against the two great adversaries. Thomas and Roglic crossed the finish line together (Filippo Zana won the stage with a long break), with an advantage of 21 seconds against Almeida. Geraint Thomas keeps the pink jersey with 29″ on Roglic, while Almeida slips into third place at 39″. Our Damiano Caruso slips into fifth place at 3’51”behind Dunbar (fourth at 3’39”).

Below is the general classification of the Giro d’Italia 2023 after the eighteenth stage. Tomorrow’s stage will be the most demanding and demanding of the entire Corsa Rosa: a day in the Dolomites for strong hearts with the arrival at the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, decisive for the ranking before the uphill time trial of Monte Lussari.
