The riders are engaged in a long and fast downhill stretch, which will bring the stage to the flying finish line of Filetto. The lead of the nine leaders stabilized at 5 minutes. Behind it is the Trek Segafredo of the Lopez pink jersey leading the chase. The Spaniard had a problem with his bicycle a few kilometers ago, but he returned without worries. There are no updates on Pello Bilbao, who crashed at the beginning of the stage and is currently in a group without problems.

The ninth, highly anticipated stage of the 2022 Giro d’Italia has begun! The road is already climbing on the Rionero Sannitico (2nd category of 9 km at 6.7%) and there have been several attacks, even if the escape has not yet taken hold. Among others, Mathieu van der Poel also moved, but he was reprized. Matthew Holmes, on the other hand, was the first to pass the GPM of Valico del Macerone, ahead of Diego Rosa and Natnael Tesfatsion. The sprinters, on the other hand, are already breaking away. It will be a long day for them …
10:30 am, Giro LIVE, stage 9: the favorites
For how they have pedaled in recent days and for how their respective teams have worked – wisely – on the Blockhaus we will see the first real direct confrontation between Richard Carapaz e Simon Yates. It cannot be otherwise, considering the stakes. Someone will certainly try the breakaway of the day given the many GPMs, even for the blue jersey, but in the end it will be one of the big names to go on to win. 10:00 am, Giro d’Italia 2022, stage 9: the route
It is the first real stage of this first part of the Giro, with the Blockhaus moving the ranking at the end of the first (long) week. It starts immediately uphill with the riders who will climb three GPMs in the first 40 km. Pass of the Macerone (3.1 km al 5.7%), Rionero Sannitico (9 km al 6.7%), e Roccaraso (7.3 km at 6.1%). Long descent and you will start going up again with the Guardiagrele (3.9 km at 5.3%). There is also the climb of La Forca (8.9 km at 4.1%), but we are starting to get serious with Passo Lanciano. 10.3 km at 7.6%, peaking at 14%. It’s just the starter of the last climb, with the riders approaching the log cabin almost without a meter of plain for the whole day. Then the grand finale. A 13.6km climb at 8.4%. We start with gradients that barely exceed 7%, but after 4 km we will always be close to 10% gradient, with a peak at 14%. Level a bit at the height of the last kilometer, but watch out for the gaps. If in the day, the winner can give even more than a minute to the opponents.
