Giro d’Italia 2021: from Turin to Milan, with dirt road, homage to Dante, Cortina olimpica and Zoncolan

The 104th edition from Saturday 8 to Sunday 30 May: 21 stages, 3450 km. Two time trials: 9 km in Turin and 29.4 km on the last day. Stop in Ravenna for Dante’s 700th anniversary. White roads in Montalcino, Dolomite stage with Pordoi (Cima Coppi) and Giau, unprecedented ascents in Sega di Ala, Alpe di Mera and Alpe di Motta on the penultimate day

The 2021 Giro d’Italia was presented in the Rai studios in Corso Sempione, which will start on Saturday 8 May from Turin and will end on Sunday 30 May after 21 stages and 3,450 km. The Unification of Italy, Dante Alighieri, the 90th birthday of the Maglia Rosa (worn for the first time in 1931 – first stage won by Learco Guerra and Giro won by Francesco Camusso), the great mountains, the landscapes, the villages and Italian cities, the Winter Olympics and the memory of great men and champions who have brought prestige to cycling and the Giro d’Italia are some of the ingredients of the 104 edition of the Corsa Rosa.

10 years after the last time, and on the 160th anniversary of the unification of Italy, Turin and the Piedmont Region will host the Great Start of the Giro d’Italia. The first stage will be an individual time trial of 9 kilometers through the streets of Turin; the second a stage suitable for sprinters from Stupinigi (Nichelino) to Novara (173 kilometers) while the third will start from Biella to finish in Canale after 187 km (stage move suitable for finisseurs or hand strokes).

First uphill arrival, in the fourth stage, in Sestola starting from Piacenza. The word to the sprinters in the Modena-Cattolica on Wednesday 12 May. Sixth very treacherous fraction with 3,400 meters in altitude that will take the group from the Frasassi Caves to Ascoli Piceno (San Giacomo) with two GPMs in the middle and the finish at 1090 m. The Notaresco – Termoli (178 km) is a stage still suitable for the fast wheels of the group. Saturday 15 May Foggia – Guardia Sanframondi (173 kilometers) with still altimetric difficulties (3,400m in altitude) with the Bocca della Selva GPM 53 km from the finish. Unprecedented uphill arrival in Abruzzo, in Campo Felice, in the hamlet of Sunday 16 May starting from Castel di Sangro. A stage with still 3,400 m in altitude that includes three Mountain Grand Prix before the final steep. The 10th stage on Monday 17 May, from L’Aquila to Foligno, could adapt to long distance escapes or coups in the final. The first day of rest of the Giro is scheduled for Tuesday 18.

It starts again, Wednesday 19, with a stage that promises a show from Perugia to Montalcino (Brunello di Montalcino Wine Stage) with an undulating first part while in the last 70 kilometers 35 will be of Strade Bianche. The last arrival in Montalcino, in 2010, saw Cadel Evans win the stage in the world championship jersey on a day marked by rain and mud. Siena – Bagno di Romagna (Bartali stage) will pay tribute to two special men who made cycling great: Gino Bartali and Alfredo Martini. The race will touch both Ponte a Ema and Sesto Fiorentino, ending in Bagno di Romagna after 3 Gpm and 3,700m of altitude difference. In memory of Dante Alighieri, on the 700th anniversary of his death, the 13th stage from Ravenna (where the Supreme Poet is buried) to Verona awaits the sprinters. Saturday 22 May, departing from Cittadella, is the day of the feared Zoncolan (you climb from the Sutrio side). The only time he was faced from that side dates back to 2003 with the victory of Gilberto Simoni. The Grado-Gorizia, a fraction suitable for finisseurs, includes a circuit, to be repeated three times, which will cross over into neighboring Slovenia. Sacile – Cortina d’Ampezzo, on Monday 24 May, will close the second week. It is the Dolomite stage with the Fedaia Pass (Montagna Pantani), the Pordoi Pass (Cima Coppi) and the Giau Pass before the finish line in the city that will host the Winter Olympics in 2026.

After the second day of rest, we set off again with another mountain stage from Canazei to Sega di Ala (an unprecedented uphill arrival for the Giro). Before the final ascent, the Passo San Valentino must be climbed. Thursday 27 May, the 18th stage from Rovereto to Stradella. An insidious fraction with several tears in the final in the Oltrepo Pavese hills. Stage 19 will start from Abbiategrasso and will end on Alpe di Mera in Valsesia (unpublished arrival). This fraction with 3.700m of difference in altitude also includes the ascent of Mottarone and that of Colma di Varallo. A stage marked by 5 stars of difficulty and 4,800 m in altitude will start from Verbania and will end on the Alpe di Motta in the Spluga Valley. Also to be climbed the San Bernardino Pass and the Spluga Pass, two climbs that will take the group over two thousand meters. Grand finale, Sunday 30 May, with an individual time trial of 29.4 km that will start from Senago and end under the Duomo where, as in the 2020 edition, the winner of the 2021 Giro d’Italia will be crowned.
