EF Education-EasyPost has announced its squad for the upcoming Giro d’Italia. The American team puts Hugh Carthy forward as the classification leader. Magnus Cort, who won three stages in the Tour of Spain last year, is making his comeback. The Dane broke in Tirreno-Adriatico his collarbone.
Carthy has already finished on the podium of a Grand Tour. He finished third in the 2020 Vuelta. Last year, the Briton took part in the Giro d’Italia, but did not get further than eighth place. This season Carthy started without really short results, but in the Tour of the Alps he did finish in the top-10. The 27-year-old climber finished the Italian stage race in ninth.
In the mountains Carthy will mainly get help from Diego Andrés Camargo, Merhawi Kudus, Jonathan Caicedo and Simon Carr. The latter two will also have opportunities to attack, says sports director Juan Manuel Gárate on the team site. Meanwhile, on flat and hilly terrain, Owain Doull and the Dutchman Julius van den Berg will be standing by to support Carthy. Van den Berg has already driven several big rounds on Carthy’s side in recent years.
Cort will undoubtedly also be able to contribute, but the 29-year-old will also be more than happy to win a ride himself. If he succeeds, he will have completed the trilogy: daily success in all three Grand Tours. “It looks good for the Giro. The recovery is going well and I think I can start in good shape,” the 29-year-old wrote on his social media last week. “In the past I have shown that I can grow in a race.”
