Due to the congenital muscle weakness “she had pneumonia a few times and illnesses were always difficult to cope with,” said her mother Andrea Suppan in “Vienna Today”. As a result of the weak muscles, Matilda developed scoliosis, a lateral displacement of the spine.
Girls “grown” after surgery
It is a small medical miracle: A young Viennese woman with a severe muscular disease has grown 13 centimeters taller after an extensive operation.

Shortly before Christmas, Matilda was operated on in the Donaustadt clinic. The difficult operation lasted 14 hours, according to Georg Grabmeier, Senior Physician for Orthopedics and Traumatology at the Donaustadt Clinic: “First, an intervention from the side was necessary to loosen the spine and then to be able to correct and stabilize everything from behind.”
The girl survived the operation well
Doctors from various fields, including experts from the Floridsdorf Clinic, attended the operation. “By working on the spinal cord here, there was also the risk that damage could occur. A colleague was there from morning to night and checked the nerve cords, it needs a very special anesthetic, it needs very special care, ”said Grabmeier.
Matila survived the operation well and is fine a few weeks after the operation. The family now has a completely new attitude towards life. “It is a miracle for us that it went that way. Of course, it will also be much better from the medical point of view, because your organs simply have a lot more space now, ”said father Bernd Suppan. Due to her age, Matilda’s spine could be stabilized in such a way that no further operations are necessary.
