39-year-old Michael Cartledge and his girlfriend, 37-year-old Charlotte Cox from the small town of Spalding, England, shopped together in a supermarket. By then, Michael and Charlotte had been dating for about three months.
Michael claims that he was the one who suggested that his girlfriend buy a lottery ticket.

“Charlotte said she didn’t have any money left for the lottery ticket, but I said I would wire her the money,” the man tells the newspaper The Sun.
Since Michael did not have his bank card with him, Charlotte paid for the purchases. He claims that he transferred the money for the ticket to her on the spot, at the cash register of the supermarket, which was recorded by CCTV cameras.
At home, they checked the lottery tickets and found that their winnings amounted to one million pounds (approximately €1.2 million).
“We couldn’t believe it. We talked about buying a new house. Charlotte wanted a new car, nothing expensive – a Kia or something like that,” recalls Michael.
However, Charlotte suddenly announced her divorce and disappeared, taking with her all the lottery ticket winnings.
“I know she paid for it through her bank account, but for moral reasons the amount should be split in half,” insists the man.
However, Charlotte claims that she bought the lottery ticket herself and that Michael did not transfer money to her for it.
The company that ran the lottery did its own investigation and concluded that only the person who paid for the ticket, ie Charlotte, was entitled to the prize.
“This means that the prize can only be paid out to one person, and this has always been reported,” a company spokesman said.
