MOVIE REVIEW. “Stranger things” star Millie Bobby Brown fights a dragon in “Damsel”.
An 80s-inspired fantasy film with an updated attitude, that isn’t as cool as it thinks it is but could very well be a Netflix hit.
FANTASY. A piece of medieval fantasy based on the old traditional story of a “damsel in distress” – i.e. a young lady who has got into trouble and needs to be rescued by a man, or several – would today be immediately subject to flogging at the modern shame stake of the internet.
So a filmmaker who wants to put a young beautiful woman in danger must find new ways. And Spanish Juan Carlos Fresnadillowho here works from a script by Dan Mazeaudo so by letting Millie Bobby Brown go a match against a huge dragon.
The “Stranger Things” star plays the beautiful Elodie, who agrees to marry a prince to save her family’s finances, but instead of living happily ever after, is dropped into a cave as a sacrifice to a beast , by order of the Evil Queen (Robin Wright).
And down there, in the dark, it’s then up to herself, with shorter and shorter hair and less and less clothing, to survive and deal with the dragon that has feasted on young women for generations.
Brown has a large fan base and as a girl power saga for young people, “Damsel” has the potential to be a hit.
But it’s a thin story, defying expectations in the most expected way. And for nostalgic adults who grew up with the 80s films that supposedly served as inspiration, it’s enough to watch the trailer, where Netflix manages to cover exactly the entire story in three minutes.
