TORONTO – The Girl Guides of Canada is asking its members to choose between two names to replace the “Brownies”.
The two proposed names are “Comets” and “Embers”. Girl Guides of Canada does not provide the French equivalent on their website.
Until last month, Girl Guides of Canada’s division for 7- and 8-year-old girls was called “Brownies.” The organization decided to change this name because it might offend black youth.
Girl Guides of Canada says many people of color refuse to sign up because of the name. They hope the name change will make them feel more comfortable about joining the group.
The invitation to vote was sent to members via email on Tuesday.
The email also explains the choice of the two names. Therefore, comets “are inspiring, [car] they travel through space, reflect the light and courageously pave the way”.
As for the “embers” (embers), it should be remembered that even if they are small, they are “carriers of an energy that only asks to be released, and when they act together, they can produce a powerful flame”.
Girl Guides of Canada says members have until December 13 to cast their votes. The chosen name will be announced at the end of January.
