Low-hanging power cables killed two giraffes in Kenya. The animals hit the cables and were electrocuted and died.
In a wildlife park 120 kilometers outside the Kenyan capital Nairobi, two giraffes with their long necks got caught in overhead lines and died in agony. As the national wildlife park authority Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) announced in a statement on Sunday, the cables were hanging relatively low.
Animal rights activists warned on Twitter that many electricity pylons in the Soysambu Farm zoo were too low and would also endanger residents.
The power company announced an investigation and is considering replacing the low power poles. A long-term solution would be sought to avoid such accidents in the future. According to KWS, Kenya has 28,850 giraffes – 609 of them rare Rotschild giraffes.
