Giraffe Hidaya from Wildlands Adventure Zoo Emmen died on Wednesday afternoon while giving birth to her fifth cub. The foal had already died in her belly.
The delivery already started on Tuesday, Wildlands reports. ‘But because the cub was in the wrong position, it took a very long time.’
Knocked back neck
The mother giraffe clearly showed on Wednesday that she was not feeling well. The vet and caretakers decided to intervene and put her under anesthesia to help with the delivery. The little giraffe turned out to be lying with a swept back neck, which made a normal delivery impossible.
Anesthesia high risk for giraffes
‘This made the operation very difficult and took a long time. The Wildlands veterinarian received help from a neighboring veterinary practice. However, a long period under general anesthesia is always a high risk for giraffes due to their long necks and associated complicated blood circulation. Unfortunately, despite the efforts, this has also been fatal to mother Hidaya.’
