Giovanni Reyna joined Borussia Dortmund from New York City FC in 2019.
When advertising for the American talent, who played 15 Bundesliga games in 2019/20, BVB beat FC Barcelona and Manchester City, among others.
Reyna now explained in the Sports picturewhy Dortmund got the contract.
“It was the combination of the excellent perspective and the ambitions of the club,” said Reyna: “I saw the best opportunities here to make the leap to a professional and that in a team that has chances in every competition.”
His conclusion so far: “I was not wrong. And that makes me very happy.”
Reyna lost brother early
Reyna confirmed that the Tragedy for his brother Jack. He had died of a brain tumor at the age of 13; Gio was 10 at the time.
“Without Jack I wouldn’t be at BVB today,” explained Gio Reyna: “It was he who got me excited about football”. For Jack, Reyna has a tattoo on her arm that “reminds me of him”.
Reyna doesn’t want to be a child prodigy anymore
The 17-year-old wants to shake off the term “child prodigy”.
“It’s an honor to be called that. But I don’t want to be a child prodigy anymore, I want to take the step to become a seasoned professional and take my game to a higher level,” he said.
Jadon Sancho also helps him, who gives him lots of tips. “He tells me that I should be confident and trust my strengths,” said Reyna: “He encourages me when things don’t go well.”
