PAS Ioannina mourns. Greek football is in mourning. Giorgos Christovasilis, the emblematic president of the team and the man who established PAS Ioannina in the salons of Greek football, has passed away.
Christovasilis became the 18th president in the club’s history, buying 87% of the team’s shares from Alexis Kougia in 2008. He was the longest-serving and – according to many – the most successful president of the club, since with him at the helm, “Ajax of Epirus” competed for the first time in Europe in the 2015/16 season.
In recent years, PAS Ioannina has developed significantly in terms of player development, having collected large sums for the sale of Dinos Mavropanos to Arsenal (2018) and Juan Jose Perea to Stuttgart (2022).
The news of Giorgos Christovasilis’ death came just one day after the completion of the Stoiximan Super League playouts, with PAS Ioannina finishing the season 9th in the standings with 7 wins, 13 draws and 13 losses.
On Monday, May 8, the transfer of the shares of PAS Giannina from George Christovasilis to his two sons, Giannis and Panagiotis, was completed, who now undertake to continue his great work.
The announcement in detail:
“That day that we would never want to come, unfortunately has dawned. Our beloved president, George Christovasilis, passed away. All this time he fought with courage and dignity even though the battle was unequal. A wonderful man who, since 2008 when he took over as owner of the club, managed to write the most golden pages in the history of P.A.S. GIANNINA and be remembered as the best president “Ajax of Epirus” ever had.
Giorgos Christovasilis was the longest serving president in the history of the club and the man who made P.A.S. YANNINA. In his 15 years of office, he managed to lay the foundations so that P.A.S. to establish themselves in the first professional division and to be a respectable opponent for all, with a greater achievement going out to Europe in the 2015-16 season.
It was the first European summer of “Ajax of Epirus”, and the highlight of the club with the 4 matches against Oudts and Alkmaar, moments that will remain forever in the memory of all the people of Epirus. At the same time, he came very close to the dream of a Greek Cup final, since twice the team reached the semi-final stage of the institution.
The family of P.A.S. GIANNINA mourns and with deep sadness we express our sincere condolences to the family of Giorgos Christovasilis and his relatives for his untimely loss.
Have a nice trip president, thank you is not enough for all these beautiful moments you offered in the history of P.A.S. and in the city of Ioannina“.
