One of the biggest legends in the fashion business has released scandalous details of her life.
After nearly 25 years of silence, iconic fashion designer Giorgio Armani has finally broken his silence about the sexual experiences he had with men throughout his long life.
The fashion mogul – now 90 – has not gone public about his sex life since 2000, when he told Vanity Fair that he
“had women in my life. And sometimes men.”
In an interview with Corriere della Sera, the designer, whose business is valued at $13 billion, talks about losing his virginity, realizing he was attracted to men for the first time and the powerful relationship he had with his business partner.
Armani admitted that he lost his virginity to a girl in his class,
before describing his first gay crush while at summer camp.
“I never talked about it,” he revealed. “It happened under a shed on the beach at Misano, at five in the afternoon, when all the summer camp boys were supposed to be resting.”
The man Armani fell in love with was in the same camp, and while he won’t explain what actually happened on that beach, it changes the direction of his life.
“I was in a group of boys and there was a leader, a young man, to whom I immediately felt drawn. I didn’t fully understand it then and I didn’t pursue it,” he said.
This early gay awakening was confusing for Armani, who still did not fully understand his own feelings. “I didn’t understand what it was. At that time I did not differentiate between men and women. It was just an attraction, a beautiful thing: I couldn’t wait to be close to him, to be touched… I felt a huge connection,” he said, before admitting that this was the first time he had told this story.
“I’ve never told anyone about it – it’s still a very emotional memory for me.”
Things changed when he met his business partner and lover Sergio Galeotti, with whom he was destined to be with for more than a decade. “We met near the Capannina nightclub in Versilia, where I was on vacation for a few days,” Armani explained. “I saw Sergio in his car and immediately fell in love with his Tuscan smile.”
“When Sergio died, a part of me died with him.
I’m still amazed that I found the resilience to endure such immense pain,” he says, before recounting how difficult it was for him to watch Galeotti fall ill.
“I had to use my willpower to deal with all the pain and agony. A whole year spent by Sergio’s bedside. And all this happened when our careers were on the rise, when we were becoming famous, reaching world fame. That was the moment I gained confidence in myself, that’s when I got hit.”
Now the fashion icon has a relationship with Leo Dell’Orco, who is the head of the men’s style office of the world famous fashion brand. Although the two are not married and Armani does not say he is in love with his partner, he wears a “beautiful diamond ring” that he once had to save from a fire.
“I think about it and I realize that it doesn’t make sense to be in love and give him so little because I just don’t have that much space,” he explained. “But I have a deep affection for Leo, who has lived with me for years and is my closest person.”
