Gio Urshela underwent elbow surgery – Daily Final Version

Gio Urshela underwent surgery on Friday to remove a bone splinter from his right elbow, and the infielder is expected to recover within three months.the Yankees announced.

The Yankees first recognized Urshela’s elbow problem in late August, keeping him on the disabled list for a period in September. Dr. Christopher Ahmad performed Urshela’s surgery at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, and everything is said to have gone as expected.

At his season-ending press conference, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said surgery had not been deemed necessary for the 29-year-old, who was showing no symptoms at the time. Urshela hit .298 / .368 / .490 (136 OPS +) with six home runs and 30 RBIs in 43 games last season.

The Yankees’ time frame indicates that Urshela should be ready for the opening game scheduled for April 1 against the Blue Jays, although her Spring Training debut will likely be delayed.

Miguel Andújar, Thairo Estrada and Tyler Wade are among those who could see increased playing time early in camp.

Finalist for the Gold Glove Award last year, Urshela has provided excellent production since being acquired from Toronto in a 2018 exchange.

In the past two seasons, Urshela has hit .310 / .358 / .523 (133 OPS) with 27 home runs and 104 RBIs in 175 games.
