In 2021, the actress was fired Gina Carano from the hit series The Mandalorian, where she played the role of Carasynthia “Cara” Dune. She was reportedly kicked off the TV show over a social media post in which she compared being a Republican to being a Jew during the Holocaust.
Now she’s suing Disney & Lucasfilms for wrongful termination, of which she is seeking $75,000 in damages and to reprise her role as Cara in The Mandalorians future seasons. Variety reports that the lawsuit is backed financially by Elon Musk and his platform X, despite the posts she was fired for being published on Instagram.
“As a sign of X Corp’s commitment to free speech, we are proud to provide financial support to Gina Carano’s lawsuit, giving her the opportunity to seek redress for her free speech at X and the ability to work without bullying, harassment or discrimination”says Joe Benarroch, chief business officer at X, in a statement.
In the lawsuit, Carano’s lawyers also point to previous social media posts by men Star Wars-actors who Pedro Pascal and Mark Hamill, in which President Donald Trump and his followers were compared to Adolf Hitler and Nazis. They argue that these statements went unpunished, which means discrimination on Disney’s part.
Neither Disney nor Lucasfilms have commented on Gina Carano’s claims.
