When Nicol discovers that Massa has been hit by a car, she has her parents rush to get the animal off the street. She thinks it’s dirty herself. Still, Massa was “part of the family,” so Nicol is saddened to be dead.
Finally, Nicol goes to a park with her mother and father to bury the duck. Why the duck can’t be buried on her own plot (or rather Peter Gillis’s plot) is anyone’s guess. Anyway, Massa will get a solemn service. With flowers, a cross and – yes – a coffee table.

Another person is especially unhappy about Nicol’s behavior. “You have your mother take a dead duck off the road, your father dig the grave, and your job is to complain… It’ll just be your daughter.
But her mother just throws a party and brings coffee for the duck’s funeral,’
