When asked by host Paul Timroth whether directing a play and directing a film are different or the same, Gillinger explains: “There is a difference, but a director is a director. Likewise, you tell your story, maybe the techniques are a little different, but if you live in movies all your life, then where’s the problem?” The director remembers the intensive filming process, which was 12 hours a day for 28 days.

“After that, you’re just finished and you need about a month to leave. I went to Italy and came back calmly, and I came back with a fresh head, so I didn’t want to see it any sooner,” says Jillinger about the filmed material before the editing process, “That’s what the great masters also say – that it is imperative to let it sit. As long as you’re inside it, you can’t rationalize it.” Also, during the film process, the director together with cameraman Jānis Eglīti improvised a lot.
“The actors were great, so I could indulge in improvisation,” continues Gillinger about the cooperation with the actors, “I am confident that I will get what I want from them. The theater director has the advantage of this – throughout his conscious life, in the profession for 30 years, he works with actors on a daily basis, continuously making a show after a show in principle. Film directors work with actors once every three years, maybe even less often. Therefore, it is even more difficult for them, because they do not have the experience of how to get what they want out of those actors.”
