The latter suggested the withdrawal of the footballer’s French nationality because of his prayers for the victims of Gaza. The accusation immediately caused an outcry, with Stéphane Ravier saying that Benzema “brings shame to France”. Gilles Verdez took the floor to remind us that withdrawal of nationality was simply not possible in the case of Karim Benzema, emphasizing that the football player does not have dual nationality. He is not French with a French mother. Benzema’s lawyer, Maître Hugues Vigier, has already clarified this question.
“Karim Benzema is French, he does not have dual nationality. I read somewhere that she (Senator Valérie Boyer) wrote that he was binational. He is only French and never asked for, nor wanted, Algerian nationality. Her mother is French. Considering the forfeiture of nationality for native nationals, if we go back in history, it is Nazi Germany.” Master Hugues Vigier denounced this proposal as part of a “race to one-upmanship towards “extreme right”, describing the situation as “hellish” for Karim Benzema, who thus finds himself “instrumentalized with everything he is and what he represents”. A new media episode which adds tension around the figure of the famous footballer.
