No less than 34 people took part, on Saturday February 19, 2022, in the guided tour of the cathedral organized by the Chartres tourist office and led by Gilles Fresson, historian and heritage expert.
“My objective is to give visitors the elements to give them the means to marvel, so that they discover a much more interesting world than they had imagined”, sums up the specialist. “A better understanding of the building makes it possible to admire it a little better”.

“A real comic book”
Headphones screwed on their heads, for more than an hour and a half, visitors listened carefully to Gilles Fresson’s comments concerning, first, the remarkable architecture of the building, then the richness of the stories told by its sculptures and stained glass windows.

The opportunity to learn, pell-mell, that this cathedral was built in just 25 years, which was “dazzling” for the time; that 80% of the stained-glass windows it still houses are original; or that its labyrinth is the only one left from the Middle Ages…
Do you know these four secrets about Chartres Cathedral?
Gilles Fresson, who has been studying Chartres Cathedral for years, also gave visitors the keys to discovering what the 154 stained glass windows in the building tell us. “It’s a real comic book, for which there are different levels of reading,” he explains. “We begin the reading with the first stained glass window located on the left, when we enter the cathedral, a stained glass window dedicated to Noah. And the reading ends with the last stained glass window on the right, which is dedicated to Saint John, the apostle author of the Apocalypse…”.
Practice. Next tours guided by Gilles Fresson on Saturday 5 March at 3 p.m. and Saturday 19 March at 2.30 p.m. Single price, €10. Information and reservations at the Chartres tourist office at Tel. 02.37.18.26.26.
