A career during which he had many successes and traveled the world. But behind this fame is also hiding a man who fought all his life, in particular because of a medical blunder which will have marked his history.
Gilbert Montagné affected by medical imprudence from his first months of life
Gilbert Montagné’s fate did not make him wait long before revealing to him the vicissitudes of life. Indeed, he was born prematurely in 1951 which placed him between life and death for several weeks.
As he told the magazine himself Paris Match: “I weighed 950 g…. The doctor put silver nitrate in my eyes. In front of the dismay of my parents, he said to them: “’Do not worry, the little one will go out like a candle”.
Thus, following these statements, he also spoke about an event that fundamentally changed things. Indeed, the nursing staff in order to ensure his survival had placed him on oxygen. A good initiative which certainly allowed him to live, but unfortunately also led to negative repercussions due to a bad dosage.
He thus related the facts as follows in the famous French celebrity magazine: “I was given oxygen, a little too much, because, at the time, they did not master the dosage. The optic nerves have been burnt!… ”.
A medical error with irreversible consequences for Gilbert Montagné
Although he managed to survive after all these vicissitudes relating to the first months after his birth, the incident he mentioned regarding oxygen left him with a serious after-effect. It is actually from this event that his loss of sight comes from.
“Since this minute, I have been blind” were his own words about it. A handicap that was especially not easy for the author of the album The Fool in love in 2021, because he had to face his illness without any emotional support at the beginning.
“I fought alone… At the time, parents were not allowed to stay with their babies”.
Gilbert Montagné owes his beautiful existence to his optimistic philosophy of life
Despite the fact of having lost the use of his eyes very early on, Gilbert Montagné had great successes. On the one hand, his singing career is marked by numerous successful albums and dozens of shows around the world.
On the other hand, on a personal level, he is among other things the father of two children. This delightful journey is best understood through his words: “It is very important to smile at life, because it is the only way that it will smile back at you.”
Now 70 years old, his story is therefore a great lesson in life which should inspire blind people. He has even always shown his commitment to the well-being of this category of people to which he proudly expresses his membership.
