Gijón will host the ruling of the prestigious Critics Award in June | BE Gijón | Today for Today Gijón

Gijón warms up for what will be its most literary month; a June marked by the Book Fair, the inauguration of the exhibition on María Zambrano and the failure of Critics Award.

It will be the first time that Gijón receives these literary awards that the Spanish Association of Literary Critics (AECL) grants annually to the best works of narrative and poetry published in Spain during the previous year. “They are two categories that involve a broad focus on literary creation. They have great prestige among readers, but also among readers,” Miguel Barrero, director of the Municipal Foundation of Culture of Gijón, said in SER Gijón. Total, There are eight awards since, since 1976, the Awards have also been extended to works written in the other three official languages: Catalan, Galician and Basque.

Gijón thus becomes the venue for both the deliberation and the awarding of the awards. On June 4, 21 critics from all over Spain -names known in the different media-, They will deliberate and on June 5 the authors who win the distinction this year will be known.

According Barrero it was the association that contacted the Municipal Foundation of Culture last year to see if they wanted to host the awards. “That they have thrown us that proposal means that Gijón sounds in the literary field,” he pointed out.

The awards, which have great prestige among literary awards, have the peculiarity of not having an economic endowment. “There are awards that are important because of the award they give and others that are important because of who gives them. In this case, this award is given by critics, so it is as if the literature opposition court recognized you.” In the history of the Critics’ Prize Poets such as José Hierro or Blas de Otero, and authors such as Delibes, Cela, Torrente Ballester and Sánchez Ferlosio have been awarded.
