More than a footballer. Even though he was one of the greatest footballers of all time. Why Gigi Riva lies in that handful of athletes whose value went beyond that, albeit phenomenal, of the pitch. And he can be considered, without fear of exaggerating or slipping into rhetoric, an authentic national hero, one from a history book so to speak. Riva represented the best of what an Italian can be and he did it strictly in his own way, in a “stubborn and contrary direction”, as he would have said Fabrizio De AndréSardinian by adoption, just like him, and linked to him by a friendship that thrills to think about, imagining the silent and immense mutual respect of two similar giants.

Even knowing that his health had been tormenting him for some time with the challenges of age, his death catches us completely unprepared and without any emotional defense. Because if the footballer made us dream fifty years ago, the man continued to give us his contribution to the Italian football cause, his wisdom and his authenticity until the last days, giving us the comfortable feeling of having a grandfather, the grandfather who everyone dreams of having, with a great story and great stories to tell and which gave that sweet security of being able to ask for advice, knowing that you would receive the right and probably non-trivial one.
