Of the three space rocks, one is considered potentially dangerous to our planet.
On the evening of December 25, according to scientists’ forecasts, three asteroids at once, one of which is potentially dangerous, will approach the Earth at a very close by space standards distance, writes Newsweek.

- The first asteroid to hit Earth is called 2022 YL1 and its dimensions are estimated to be between 38 and 85 meters, which is roughly the same size as the wingspan of a Boeing 777.
- The second asteroid is called 2013 YA14 and is between 50 and 110 meters in size, which is equivalent to the size of a football field.
- The third asteroid is called 2022 TE14 and is estimated to be between 100 and 210 meters in size, which is the height of a 50-story building.
The exact size of the near-Earth asteroids, which are these objects, is quite difficult to establish, because scientists give only approximate numbers. As for the numbers in the name of these space stones, they show when these asteroids were discovered.
According to astronomers, although the asteroid 2022 TE14, given its size, is considered potentially dangerous, there is no reason to panic and all three space objects should fly.
According to scientists’ calculations, on the evening of December 25, these asteroids will be at a fairly close distance from the Earth by space standards:
- 2022 YL1 will fly at a distance of 2.9 million km;
- 2013 YA14 will fly at a distance of 1 million km;
- 2022 TE14 will fly at a distance of 4.3 million km.
All three asteroids revolve around the Sun and occasionally come close to our planet, although scientists believe that none of these space rocks are expected to fall to Earth in the next 100 years. Although some experts are still not sure.
Basically, most of the asteroids in the solar system are concentrated in the asteroid belt, which is located between Mars and Jupiter, but there are space rocks that fly much closer around our star and are called near-Earth asteroids.
If, according to scientists, there are more than 1 million space rocks of different sizes in the asteroid belt, then only a little more than 30 thousand near-Earth asteroids have been discovered so far. If an asteroid approaches the Earth at a distance of less than 7.5 million km and has a size of 100 to 140 meters, then such an object is already considered potentially dangerous.
According to scientists, this means that there is a theoretical possibility that such stones will collide with our planet, although this could happen in 100 to 1000 years. But on the other hand, in space there are many different unpredictable events that can affect the flight trajectory of a space stone, which can lead to a catastrophe on our planet.
Focus already wrote that the results of changing the orbit of the asteroid Didyma by the NASA spacecraft are still being studied by astronomers. In particular, new data allowed scientists to find outh unforeseen consequences space collision.
Same Focus wrote that in mid-December a huge, 140 meter asteroidalso considered potentially dangerous.
