(sks). The Giessen 46ers have a weekend with two home games coming up. On Friday, the second division basketball team will first face Frankfurt (7 p.m.). The East Hall is sold out for the first time since 2020. On Sunday we welcome Düsseldorf (3 p.m.). Is the balance between emotion and focus successful?
It was a game against the Frankfurt Skyliners that marked a turning point. The derby in March 2020 was the last sold-out game to be played in the Gießen-Ost sports hall. After that, Corona put a stop to the sport. Since then, all sports apart from football have been trying to somehow return to the viewership of the pre-pandemic.
Of course: The fact that ex-46ers coach Denis Wucherer is on the line at Frankfurt brings another good dose of pepper to the stew. The Skyliners, who were relegated from the BBL for the first time in the spring, are traveling to the Lahn for the first ProA meeting between the two Hessian clubs. Gießen coach “Frenki” Ignjatovic also has the Düsseldorf game on Sunday in mind: “I hope my players don’t forget that we have a second match this weekend.” Is the balance between emotion and focus successful?
The Skyliners started the season with four wins. “That was a huge boost in self-confidence for her,” said Ignjatovic. Wucherer continues the club’s tradition and relies on many young talent. Bruno Vrcic, one of the experienced Germans, is still missing due to a knee injury.
The top scorer so far is Brooker Coplin. The US Guard had moved from Düsseldorf to the Main. The captain is Marco Völler, who was part of the Central Hesse squad during Wucherer’s days in Gießen (2016/2017) and had actually already hung up his boots. The narrow win against Kirchheim (79:77) was recently held by Cameron Henry – another American guard.
Wucherer has been a guest in Giessen with Würzburg several times and always found the “vibes” to be “very pleasant. That was fun.” He doesn’t know whether that will last when he comes to coach arch-rivals from Frankfurt: “Let’s see what the fans have in their kit that they didn’t fire against Würzburg back then,” he says Giessen promotion coach from 2015.
