Gibraltar is shielded against a hypothetical diplomatic crisis between the United Kingdom and Spain. The British Strait Territory is storing emergency medications in tunnels under its famous rock in case the Brexit negotiations with the EU.
From the divorce between the UK and the EUSpain has waived border controls while negotiations take place, allowing Gibraltarians and Spaniards freely cross the land border. Even so, The talks are still ongoing and after three years a bilateral agreement has not been reached.
In this way, Spain is pressuring the United Kingdom to accept the EU’s border demands and has threatened that a “no agreement” will mean a hard border with serious implications for trade and importsincluding these medicinal supplies.
A spokesperson for the Rock’s government confessed to the British newspaper The Telegraph who work to “maintain stock levels, especially for the health service.”
Gibraltar is using the kilometers of tunnels dug by the British Army during its 200 years of presence in the Iberian Peninsula. These passageways have been used in several war conflicts, such as the siege of Gibraltar (18th century), the Spanish civil war (1936-1939) or the Second World War (1939-1945).
For the moment, the Gibraltarians and Spaniards of The Line of Conceptionhave come together to protest in favor of an agreement that does not negatively impact the local economy of both cities.
According to the british newspaper The Daily Express, Protestants “are especially concerned about the consequences of the strict border controls that the United Kingdom proposes.” The next demonstration will take place this Friday October 25 in the border city.
