Launch BBCOn Friday (9/23/2022), the British Overseas Territory submitted an offer to become a city earlier this year as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

The Rock’s status was reaffirmed under the leadership of Boris Johnson who described it as a grand prize that celebrates its rich history and dynamism.

Gibraltar has been a British overseas territory since 1713 when it was ceded to English under a peace treaty signed after the War of the Spanish Succession.

Previously there were 39 places applying to be cities in a jubilee competition, and eight of them, including Doncaster, Bangor, and Dunfermline, eventually gained city status.

In England city status means that the area may have a cathedral, university or large population, but no established rules are given for this. The status was granted by the king on the advice of the minister.

The state of the city will also benefit from the addition of materials, the placement of the area on the map, and usually a source of pride for the residents.

The government said Gibraltar was omitted from the official list after initially receiving the title from Queen Victoria, but it is unclear how this happened. The latest records of the 81 places designated as cities have now been published.

Gibraltar is one of only five cities outside the UK to be recognized. Hamilton in Bermuda, Jamestown on St. Helena and Douglas on the Isle of Man are already on the list, while Stanley in the Falkland Islands are among those nominated for this year’s Jubilee.

Southend in Essex was also granted town status earlier this year following the assassination of Parliamentarian David Amess, who had represented Southend West constituency since 1997 and had campaigned extensively on the issue. .
