PHOENIX (AP) — Matt Chapman hit a fielding homer, Casey Schmitt and Michael Conforto each added solo shots and the San Francisco Giants continued to pose a problem for teams with playoff aspirations, beating the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-3 on Monday night.
The Diamondbacks (87-70) lost more ground in the NL playoff race as they try to claim one of three wild-card berths. They are in sole possession of the final wild-card spot, 1 1/2 games ahead of the Atlanta Braves. The San Diego Padres (90-66) and New York Mets (87-69) occupy the top two spots.
The Mets and Braves face off in a decisive three-game series that begins Tuesday in Atlanta.
San Francisco is out of playoff contention, but has played extremely well over the past week against teams still in contention. The Giants are 6-1 against the Baltimore Orioles, Kansas City Royals and Diamondbacks.
It was another frustrating loss for Arizona, which blew an 8-0 lead Sunday and fell to the Milwaukee Brewers, 10-9.
For the Giants, Dominican Jerar Encarnación went 1-for-5 with one run scored and one RBI. Puerto Rican Heliot Ramos went 1-for-5 with one run scored.
For the Diamondbacks, Dominican Geraldo Perdomo went 2-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI. Venezuelan José Herrera went 1-for-2 with one run scored.
