This indicated that they encountered a denser environment.
But gigantic masses have been making themselves known for several decades. They cause an anomaly that weakens the Earth’s magnetic field. This “crack” has grown in size recently and could therefore pose a risk to the operation of satellites and other spacecraft.

It creates a magnetic field capable of capturing and deflecting a stream of protons, electrons and alpha particles that are heading from the Sun to the Earth at a speed of approximately 450 kilometers per second. But gigantic dense spheres floating between the Earth’s outer core and lower mantle are causing the magnetic poles to shift and distort in the South Atlantic region. “That means there’s a magnetic field growing here with reversed polarity. Its strength is therefore weaker than its surrounding strength, “explains Weijia Kuang of the Goddard Geodetic and Geophysical Laboratory.

The crack poses a potential risk to low-orbit satellites. Charged particles can cause a short circuit and temporarily disable the device. The ISS space station or the crew of rockets headed into space are also at risk.

The seismic data also suggests that the spheres, each of which would engulf more than 100 Everests, are likely to continue growing. They absorb fragments of tectonic plates that have slipped under the strongest continental crust.
