The skull of a giant sea creature has been found in the English county of Dorset, writes the BBC Sunday. The skull is from one Pliosaurus, who lived about 150 million years ago. The animal could grow up to 12 meters long.
The skull found is 2 meters long. The fossil is remarkably complete and intact. This offers science opportunities to gain new insights about the animal.
The animal had more than twice the bite force of a saltwater crocodile and almost fifty times the bite force of a human.
The front part of the skull was found by a beach walker in Kimmeridge Bay on the south coast of England. That stretch of coastline is known as the Jurrasic Coast, because fossils are found more often. The rest of the skull was cut from the cliff. That is a process that takes months.
Researcher Steve Etches is certain that the rest of the animal is still hidden in the cliffs, he tells the BBC. Because the cliffs are eroding quickly, now is the time to look for the animal.
The skull of the sea animal is central to a program by British biologist David Attenborough, which will be broadcast on New Year’s Day on New Year’s Day. BBC.
