Giant rhino fossil found in China, taller than giraffe

Suara.com – Scientists report findings new species Giant rhino ancient history in Gansu Province, northwest China.

It is estimated that this rhino is the largest mammal that has ever lived on land.

This new species has the name paraceratherium linxiaensis, which is said to have lived about 26.5 million years ago.

This giant rhino weighs 21 tons or the equivalent of four African elephants.

This ancient hornless beast is said to have a height of up to 7 meters that can reach the tops of trees.

This figure makes it a higher animal than a giraffe.

This research was published in the journal Communications Biology.

Scientists say that analysis of fossils found near the village of Wang Jia Chuan in 2015, points to a new and different species from other giant rhinos that have been discovered.

Dr Deng Tao, lead researcher from the Beijing Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology, said the fossil’s skull and jawbone showed that the new animal had a slender skull.

The bridge of the nose is similar to the bones in today’s modern tapirs.
